Top 5: Southwest America
Finally the time has come! Henriette leaves for Southwest America with her boyfriend. They go smoothly through baggage check and customs. Via Washington D.C. they fly to Phoenix, where they are given a brand new camper after a night in a hotel. In this blog she shares her top 5.
1. Flagstaff
The road trip is about to begin! The couple travels via the beautiful Scenic Drive 89A to Flagstaff, a vibrant city in the middle of Arizona’s pine forests. Flagstaff is located on historic Route 66 and is known for its laid-back atmosphere, cozy downtown and microbreweries.
2. Million Dollar Highway
Henriette has been looking forward to the Million Dollar Highway for days. At Molas Pass they get off to enjoy the impressive view over the mountains. In the old mining town of Silverton, she indulges herself: colorful facades, nice shops, an old prison and a historic brothel from 1890. It is a pleasure with capital letters as they continue their way to Ouray.
3. Canyonlands National Park
From Moab they drive to Canyonlands National Park, this park consists of several parts. They choose Island in the Sky, the most accessible and popular area. The iconic arch of Mesa Arch certainly impresses. At Grand View Point and Green River Overlook, they take their time to take in the breathtaking views.
4. Capitol Reef National Park
In Capitol Reef National Park, they hike the Natural Bridge Trail, where a few steep sections make them sweat a lot, but the view at the end makes up for it. The next day, they drive via a scenic Scenic Byway through a landscape full of red rocks towards Bryce Canyon National Park. On the way they come across a car with a red flag, the driver gestured that they have to slow down. They look at each other in surprise. A little later they understand why: a herd of cows crosses the road, with real cowboys who lead them in the right direction. An unforgettable scene!
5. Santa Barbara
The camper rolls into the Mediterranean Santa Barbara. They park at the historic Old Mission, a mission post from the eighteenth century, and then head into the center. State Street is a long, lively shopping street full of boutiques, terraces and cozy restaurants. It radiates such a cosiness, Henriette immediately falls in love with this place. At the end of the street is Stearns Wharf: a pier with souvenir shops and eateries, where they also spot a group of pelicans on the water. As far as they are concerned, this place is absolutely recommended!
