Alinde in The Deep South: 5 tips
Travel advisor Alinde explored the Deep South last year, together with colleague Carola. They start the journey at Schiphol and after a smooth transfer in Washington D.C. they fly on to lively New Orleans in 2.5 hours. At the airport, the rental car is already waiting for them. They drive straight to their hotel in the heart of the French Quarter, where the atmosphere immediately invites you to discover the city. Alinde is happy to share her top 5 with you.
Tip 1: Cycling in New Orleans
Rent a bike, it can hardly be more Dutch! The enthusiastic guide tells Alinde and her small group of cycling buddies about the area. They cycle through the modern Business District, with its high-rise office buildings and wide streets, towards the French Quarter, with its narrow streets, wrought-iron balconies and lively atmosphere. They stop briefly at Louis Armstrong Park, along the Mississippi River and they end in the elegant Garden District neighborhood where there are gigantic houses. They are amazed!
Be sure to visit Café du Monde, for the famous fritters with a steaming cup of coffee.
Tip 2: Visit a plantation
They make a special stop at Laura Plantation. During a fascinating tour, the guide will tell you about the history of the plantation, the family that lived here and life during slavery. A little further on, they make a photo stop at Oak Alley Plantation, one of the South’s best-known plantation houses, with its impressive driveway lined by ancient oak trees.
Tip 3: Walk around Graceland, Memphis
Of course, Graceland, the iconic home of Elvis Presley, should not be missed when visiting Memphis. Alinde finds it special to realize that Elvis has lived in this house and that she walks around here so many years later. She has a Dutch (!) audio tour where she gets some background information in each room.
Tip 4: Visit Broadway, Nashville
On Broadway, the street in Nashville full of bars and live music, Alinde and Carola look for a nice bar. They really like it here! Of course they request – entirely in style – a few Morgan Wallen songs.
Tip 5: Sunset in the Smokies
At the end of the day, they drive into the Great Smoky Mountains to watch the sun slowly sink behind the mountains from a viewpoint – a perfect end to the day.
